I've been straddling the middle of two separate, but overlapping conversations regarding embedded hardware and software. The goals of the conversants are slightly different, but very close. The overall goal is to build Stuff(tm) and do it out of open source ... Stuff(tm), while in turn returning discoveries and technical results to the OSS community.
Not all of this is software, not all of it is strictly "open source" in the sense that we're using closed source hardware parts. However, the choice of hardware is strongly influnced by the vendors aparent support of the hobbiest and open source community. Any hardware designs we create will be candidate for release to the public. We may not go overboard pushing them out to the public, but our goals are to be good citizens and share.
